Target Information

Endotoxins are components of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria. They are associated with both pathogenic and non-pathogenic organisms. Endotoxins, properly defined as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) complexes, are found in bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, Shigella, Pseudomonas, Neisseria, and Haemophilus.
The biological activity of endotoxin arises from its lipid component (Lipid A), while immunogenicity is linked to its polysaccharide components. The O antigens of gram-negative bacteria are part of LPS, which triggers inflammatory responses and activates complement via the alternative pathway, contributing to the pathology of gram-negative bacterial infections.
