Target Information

The genus Streptococcus comprises a variety of pathogenic and commensal gram-positive bacteria with broad importance in medicine and industry. These bacteria inhabit hosts such as humans, horses, pigs, and cows, typically colonizing mucosal surfaces of the mouth, nares, and pharynx. Under certain conditions, they may also be found in the skin, heart, or muscle tissue. While often part of the natural flora, streptococci can cause disease under specific circumstances. Group A and B streptococci are of particular medical importance due to their potential to cause severe infections.
