Target Information

The KIR (inwardly rectifying potassium channel) family allows potassium ions to flow more readily into cells than out of them.
KIR4.1 (also known as Kir1.2) is highly expressed in the brain, including glial cells, astrocytes, and cortical neurons. It is also found in myelin-synthesizing oligodendrocytes and plays a crucial role in myelination during nervous system development.
The human KIR4.1 gene maps to chromosome 1.
KIR4.2 (Kir1.3) is expressed in kidney, lung, heart, thymus, and thyroid during development, and its gene maps to chromosome 21 in the Down syndrome region—potentially implicating it in Down syndrome pathogenesis.
KIR5.1 forms functional channels only when coexpressed with KIR4.1 or KIR4.2 in kidney and pancreas.
