Target Information
Alpha 2-Macroglobulin (A2M) is an approximately 720 kDa homotetrameric glycoprotein composed of four identical ~180 kDa subunits. Like other alpha-macroglobulins (e.g., C3, C4, and PZP), A2M exhibits an extraordinary binding capacity for diverse ligands, functioning as a humoral defense barrier against foreign peptides in plasma.
A2M acts as a panprotease inhibitor, capturing virtually any proteinase. In the brains of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, A2M has been localized to diffuse amyloid plaques, supporting its potential role in AD pathogenesis.
