Background
Many vertebrate homeobox-containing genes have been identified based on sequence similarity with Drosophila developmental genes. Members of the Dlx gene family contain a homeobox related to Distal-less (Dll), a gene expressed in the head and limbs of developing fruit flies. The Dlx family includes at least six members (DLX1–DLX6). Mutations in the DLX3 gene are associated with trichodentoosseous syndrome (TDO) and amelogenesis imperfecta with taurodontism. The DLX3 gene is located on chromosome 17 in a tail-to-tail configuration with another Dlx family member. [RefSeq, Jul 2008]
