Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a cytoplasmic enzyme involved in energy homeostasis and serves as an important serum marker for myocardial infarction. It catalyzes the reversible transfer of phosphate between ATP and phosphogens such as creatine phosphate. The enzyme acts as a homodimer in striated muscle and other tissues, and as a heterodimer with a brain isozyme in the heart. It belongs to the ATP:guanido phosphotransferase protein family.
