Background
This gene encodes a member of the gap junction protein family. Gap junctions are specialized structures on plasma membranes of contacting adherent cells, consisting of cell-to-cell channels that facilitate transfer of ions and small molecules. Gap junction proteins (connexins) differ among tissues and are divided into alpha and beta categories based on sequence similarity. Mutations in this gene account for up to 50% of pre-lingual, recessive deafness.
