Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and facilitate protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of small 28S and large 39S subunits, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes that contain 5S rRNA.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein involved in apoptotic pathways initiated by TNF-α, Fas ligand, and γ-interferon. The protein may bind ATP/GTP and interact with mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR exist but encode the same protein. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
