Target Information
Smooth Muscle Actin belongs to the actin family of proteins, which are highly conserved and play key roles in cell motility, structure, and integrity.
Alpha, beta, and gamma actin isoforms have been identified:
- Alpha actin: Major component of the contractile apparatus
- Beta and gamma actins: Involved in regulating cell motility
Smooth muscle actin is an alpha actin found in skeletal and smooth muscle, forming part of the cytoskeleton and interacting with myosin for muscle contraction and cell movement.
It is present in smooth muscle vessel walls, gut wall, myometrium, and myoepithelial cells of breast and salivary glands.
Defects in the smooth muscle actin gene are associated with familial thoracic aortic aneurysm type 6.
Alpha-smooth muscle actin is abundant in vascular and visceral smooth muscle cells and can appear in fibroblastic stress fibers during wound healing and fibrocontractive conditions.
