Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the phospholipase A2 (PLA2) family, which comprises enzymes with diverse sequence, function, localization, and cation requirements.
This gene product is a group II secreted PLA2, an extracellular enzyme with low molecular mass that requires calcium ions for catalysis.
It hydrolyzes the sn-2 fatty acid acyl ester bond of phosphoglycerides, releasing free fatty acids and lysophospholipids, and participates in the regulation of phospholipid metabolism in biomembranes.
Several alternatively spliced transcript variants with different 5′ UTRs have been identified.
