Target Information

Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits, encoded by distinct genes. They are membrane skeletal proteins involved in spectrin-actin network assembly in erythrocytes and epithelial cell junctions.
While alpha and gamma adducins are ubiquitously expressed, beta adducin expression is restricted to brain and hematopoietic tissues.
Adducin purified from human erythrocytes is a heterodimer of alpha and beta subunits. Polymorphisms in these subunits are linked to blood pressure regulation in hypertension models.
Each subunit has two domains: a protease-resistant globular N-terminal region and a protease-sensitive C-terminal region containing phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C, a calmodulin-binding site, and regions required for spectrin-actin association.
Various alternatively spliced beta adducin mRNAs encode different isoforms, whose functions are not fully understood.
