APOL1 is a secreted high-density lipoprotein that binds to apolipoprotein A-I. Apolipoprotein A-I is a major component of HDL and facilitates cholesterol efflux from cells. The apolipoprotein L family may play roles in lipid exchange and reverse cholesterol transport from peripheral cells to the liver.
