Target Information

This gene encodes a weak acid-active hyaluronidase. The encoded protein is similar in structure to other more active hyaluronidases. Hyaluronidases degrade hyaluronan, one of the major glycosaminoglycans of the extracellular matrix. Hyaluronan and its fragments are involved in cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Although previously thought to be a lysosomal enzyme active below pH 4, this protein is likely a GPI-anchored cell surface protein. It also acts as a receptor for the oncogenic Jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus. The gene resides in a chromosome 3p21.3 region associated with tumor suppression and produces two alternatively spliced transcript variants differing in the 5′ UTR.
