Target Information
Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits encoded by distinct genes. They are membrane skeletal proteins involved in spectrin-actin network assembly in erythrocytes and epithelial cell junctions.
- Alpha and gamma subunits are ubiquitously expressed.
- Beta subunit expression is restricted to brain and hematopoietic tissues.
- Adducin was first purified from human erythrocytes as an alpha-beta heterodimer.
- Polymorphisms in alpha and beta subunits are linked to blood pressure regulation in animal models.
- Each subunit has two domains: a protease-resistant globular N-terminal domain and a protease-sensitive C-terminal domain containing phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C, a calmodulin-binding site, and regions required for spectrin/actin association.
- Multiple alternatively spliced beta adducin mRNAs encoding different isoforms have been reported, though their specific functions remain unclear.
