Rabbit anti-human erythropoietin antibody reacts with erythropoietin, the principal hormone involved in the regulation of erythrocyte differentiation and maintenance of physiological levels of circulating erythrocyte mass. It is often used as a drug to treat anemia.
Target Information
Erythropoietin (EPO) is a growth factor essential for the survival, proliferation, and differentiation of erythroid precursors. EPO induces the final maturation of partially differentiated erythroid cells and promotes production of hemoglobin. The EPO receptor (EPOR) is highly expressed in precursor cells and decreases with maturation.
During fetal development, hepatocytes are the main source of EPO, whereas kidney interstitial cells become dominant after birth. EPO expression increases under hypoxic conditions and is also detected at low levels in lung and brain tissue. Recent studies suggest EPO may contribute to neuronal protection and tissue repair.
