Target Information
Human growth hormone (hGH) belongs to the somatotropin/prolactin family of hormones that regulate growth.
The GH1 gene, along with four related genes, is located on chromosome 17 and shares high sequence identity.
Alternative splicing produces five isoforms (19–24 kDa).
HGH is secreted by somatotroph cells in the pituitary and acts via cytokine receptor subfamily membrane receptors.
Its primary role is to stimulate the liver and other tissues to secrete IGF-1, promoting growth and protein synthesis.
Mutations or deletions in GH1 cause growth hormone deficiency and short stature.
