Target Information
Translocation of nuclear encoded preproteins into the mitochondrial matrix requires the coordinated action of translocases Tom and Tim, located in the outer and inner mitochondrial membranes respectively.
The Tom complex includes multiple subunits such as import receptors (Tom70, Tom37, Tom22, Tom20), small proteins (Tom7, Tom6, Tom5), and a structural component (Tom40).
The Tim channel, composed of Tim17, Tim23, and Tim44, imports nuclear-encoded mitochondrial preproteins.
Tim17 exists as two isoforms (Tim17a and Tim17b) differing in their C-terminal sequences and is ubiquitously expressed in fetal and adult tissues.
Tim17 and Tim23 form the inner membrane channel structure, while Tim44 recruits matrix Hsp70 to assist preprotein translocation.
