Product Specific Information

Store vial at -20°C prior to opening. Aliquot contents and freeze at -20°C or below for extended storage. Avoid cycles of freezing and thawing.
Centrifuge product if not completely clear after standing at room temperature.

Target Information

Keyhole limpet hemocyanin (KLH) is an extremely large, heterogeneous glycosylated protein consisting of subunits with molecular weights of 350,000–390,000, forming aggregates of 4,500,000–13,000,000.
Each domain of a KLH subunit contains two copper atoms that bind a single oxygen molecule (O₂), resulting in a distinctive opalescent blue color when oxygen is bound.
KLH is highly immunogenic yet safe in humans, making it an ideal vaccine carrier protein. It cannot be reproduced synthetically and is obtained as a purified biological product from Megathura crenulata.

KLH is widely used as a carrier protein in research, biotechnology, and therapeutic applications. Haptens—small molecules such as peptides or drugs—are not immunogenic alone and require carrier proteins like KLH to elicit an immune response.
Its large size, numerous epitopes, and abundance of lysine residues enable high hapten coupling efficiency and strong immune responses.
Because KLH originates from a gastropod, it is phylogenetically distant from mammalian proteins, reducing false positives in mammalian model systems.
However, KLH may aggregate, which can limit hapten conjugation but remains immunogenic.
