Cytokeratins are a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. They range in molecular weight between approximately 40 kDa and 68 kDa and have isoelectric points between 4.9 and 7.8.
Individual human cytokeratins are numbered 1 to 20. Expression patterns vary by epithelial type and differentiation stage, aiding in distinguishing epithelial malignancies.
Cytokeratin antibodies are useful in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry, cytopathology, and flow cytometry assays.
