Target Information
The ABL1 proto-oncogene encodes a cytoplasmic and nuclear protein tyrosine kinase involved in cell differentiation, division, adhesion, and stress responses. Its activity is negatively regulated by the SH3 domain; deletion of this domain converts c-Abl into an oncogene.
In chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) and some acute lymphoblastic leukemias (ALL), the Philadelphia chromosome results from a (9;22) translocation, fusing c-Abl sequences from chromosome 9 with the Bcr gene on chromosome 22.
The c-Abl oncogene was first identified as the viral transforming gene of Abelson murine leukemia virus (A-MuLV). It also plays a role in DNA repair and apoptosis regulation.
