Target Information
This gene encodes a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, a member of the ligand-gated ion channel superfamily involved in fast synaptic signal transmission. These pentameric receptors bind acetylcholine, inducing conformational changes that open an ion-conducting channel across the plasma membrane. The CHRNA4 protein interacts with either nAChR beta-2 or beta-4 subunits to form a functional receptor. Mutations in CHRNA4 are associated with nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy type 1, and certain polymorphisms may confer protection against nicotine addiction.
