Target Information
Parvalbumin (PV) is a calcium-binding protein expressed in specific muscle fibers and fast-firing neurons. It belongs to the EF-hand protein family and plays a role in calcium decay during muscle contraction and relaxation. The concentration of parvalbumin correlates with the rate of muscle relaxation. It is also expressed in specific GABAergic interneurons involved in maintaining excitation-inhibition balance in the cortex and hippocampus. In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients, parvalbumin immunoreactivity is absent in neuron populations lost early in the disease.
