Target Information
Aquaporins (AQP0–AQP10) are membrane water channels widely distributed in mammalian tissues.
- Most AQPs are selective for water, while AQP3, AQP7, AQP9, and one AQP10 transcript also transport urea and glycerol.
- AQP2 is activated by vasopressin, enhancing water reabsorption in kidney collecting ducts.
- Aquaporins play roles in renal water absorption, pulmonary secretion, lacrimation, cerebrospinal fluid regulation, and aqueous humor dynamics.
- In the lung, AQP5 mediates the majority of water transport across the apical membrane of type I alveolar epithelial cells.
