Product Specific Information
- This antibody does not react with Chicken or Xenopus.
- For Immunohistochemistry (PFA fixed): incubate antibody for 30 min at room temperature.
- Staining of formalin-fixed tissues requires heating tissue sections in 10 mM Tris with 1 mM EDTA (pH 9.0) for 45 min at 95°C, followed by cooling at room temperature for 20 min.
Target Information
Cytokeratin 18 (Keratin 18, KRT18, type I cytoskeletal 18) belongs to the type A (acidic) subfamily of low molecular weight keratins and exists in combination with cytokeratin 8. It is expressed in tissues from the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, urogenital tract, endocrine and exocrine tissues, and mesothelial cells.
Cytokeratin 18 is found primarily in non-squamous epithelia and is present in most adenocarcinomas and ductal carcinomas, but not in squamous cell carcinomas. Hepatocellular carcinomas express only cytokeratins 8 and 18. Mutations in the cytokeratin 18 gene are linked to cryptogenic cirrhosis. Two transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified for this gene.
Cytokeratin subtype expression patterns are increasingly used to distinguish different epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies assist in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry and are useful tools in cytopathology and flow cytometric assays.
