Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments found in epithelial cells of both keratinizing tissues (such as skin) and non-keratinizing cells (such as mesothelial cells). Although not typical markers for endothelial cells, cytokeratins have been detected in certain microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 different cytokeratins ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points between 5–8.5, identifiable via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Biochemically, CKs are categorized into two classes:
- Type I: Acidic polypeptides
- Type II: Basic polypeptides
Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from each class. Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins serve as valuable markers for tumor identification and classification.
