This 5tukon56 monoclonal antibody reacts with human CD56, also known as Neural Cell Adhesion Molecule (NCAM). CD56 is a highly glycosylated transmembrane molecule expressed in both developing and adult nervous systems, playing roles in neurogenesis, migration, neurite extension, and neural cell adhesion.
In the hematopoietic system, CD56 is expressed on NK cells and a subset of T cells (NKT cells).
For flow cytometric analysis of human CD56, clones CMSSB or TULY56 are recommended.
Applications Reported:
This antibody is suitable for western blotting, microscopy, and IHC staining of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue sections.
Applications Tested:
Validated for IHC (paraffin) using low pH antigen retrieval at ≤10 µg/mL. Antibody titration is recommended for optimal performance.
Target Information
CD56 (NCAM) is a transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family involved in adhesion and expressed in the nervous system in isoforms ranging from 120–180 kDa. It is found on T cells and NK cells, mediating cell migration, axonal growth, pathfinding, and synaptic plasticity. Polysialic modification reduces CD56-mediated adhesion.
Through its extracellular region, CD56 binds extracellular matrix components such as laminin and integrins. It is expressed in most neuroectodermal-derived cell lines and neoplasms, including retinoblastoma, medulloblastoma, astrocytoma, and neuroblastoma. CD56 serves as a sensitive neuroendocrine marker for neuroendocrine tumors and ovarian granulosa cell tumors.
Diseases associated with CD56 dysfunction include rabies and blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasms.
