Target Information
INSR (Insulin Receptor) is a receptor tyrosine kinase that mediates the biological effects of insulin. Binding of insulin to the extracellular domain stimulates glucose uptake. INSR and IGF-1 receptors share significant structural and functional similarity. The earliest cellular response to insulin stimulation is autophosphorylation of tyrosine residues in INSR. In humans, the INSR gene is located on chromosome 19. Defects in INSR are associated with various insulin resistance syndromes, while IGF-1R defects can lead to certain growth retardation disorders.
