Target Information
Cystatin C is a member of the type 2 cystatin superfamily and acts as a potent inhibitor of cysteine proteinases, including endogenous lysosomal cathepsins and pathogenic enzymes. It is a 13 kDa secreted protein found in high concentrations in biological fluids and expressed by all human nucleated cells. Alterations in Cystatin C levels have been associated with cardiovascular conditions such as atherosclerosis, amyloid angiopathy, and myocardial infarction. Due to its low molecular weight, Cystatin C serves as a useful marker for renal failure.
