Mcur1 encodes a protein that is a key regulator of the mitochondrial calcium uniporter (MCU), required for calcium entry into the mitochondrion. Mcur1 plays a direct role in uniporter-mediated calcium uptake via interaction with MCU and may be involved in assembly of membrane components of the uniporter complex.
