Target Information
In vertebrates, there are four major glucose-phosphorylating isoenzymes designated hexokinase I, II, III, and IV. Hexokinase catalyzes the phosphorylation of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate, committing glucose to the glycolytic pathway. It is an allosteric enzyme inhibited by its product GLC-6-P.
Hexokinase 2 (HK2) is predominantly expressed in insulin-responsive tissues such as skeletal muscle. Its expression is insulin-responsive, and studies in rats suggest involvement in the increased glycolysis rate observed in rapidly growing cancer cells.
