GABRA5는 포유류 뇌에서 주요 억제성 신경전달물질인 GABA의 일부로, 리간드 개폐성 염화 이온 채널인 GABA-A 수용체에서 작용합니다. 이 채널의 염화 이온 전도는 벤조디아제핀 등 GABA-A 수용체에 결합하는 물질에 의해 조절될 수 있습니다. GABA-A 수용체는 최소 16개의 서로 다른 서브유닛으로 구성되어 있으며, 세 가지 대체 비암호화 첫 엑손을 사용하는 전사 변이체가 보고되었습니다.
