Target Information
The ion channels activated by glutamate are typically divided into two classes:
- NMDA receptors (NMDAR): Sensitive to N-methyl-D-aspartate.
- AMPA receptors (AMPAR): Activated by alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxalone propionic acid.
AMPARs consist of four Glutamate Receptor Subunits (GluR1–4) and are essential in excitatory neurotransmission in the brain.
The GluR2 subunit is implicated in synaptic plasticity mechanisms such as long-term depression (LTD).
