Target Information
Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It functions as a molecular chaperone, assisting in the proper folding and assembly of polypeptides into multisubunit proteins.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains, partial complexes of the T cell receptor, and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes. It retains incompletely or improperly folded proteins within the ER.
Unlike soluble ER proteins containing the KDEL sequence for ER retention, calnexin lacks this motif but contains positively charged cytosolic residues that ensure ER localization.
The protein structure consists of a large ER luminal domain (461 amino acids), a transmembrane segment (22 amino acids), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
