The SK9 monoclonal antibody reacts with human CD1a, a 49 kDa protein expressed by cortical thymocytes and dendritic cells including Langerhans cells. The CD1 family of proteins share structural and functional similarities with MHC class I molecules but are not polymorphic. CD1a associates with beta2-microglobulin and plays a role in antigen presentation.

Target Information

CD1a is a non-polymorphic MHC Class I-related cell surface glycoprotein expressed in association with beta2-microglobulin. It is found on cortical thymocytes, Langerhans cells, dendritic cells, certain T-cell leukemias, and other tissues. CD1a mediates lipid and glycolipid antigen presentation to T cells. The CD1 family (CD1a–e) genes are located on chromosome 1 and differ in localization and ligand specificity. CD1a primarily localizes to the plasma membrane and early endocytic vesicles. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants exist, though their biological validity remains undetermined.
