L1CAM/CD171은 면역글로불린 슈퍼패밀리에 속하는 축삭당단백질로, 여러 면역글로불린 유사 도메인과 type III 섬유연결소 유사 반복으로 구성된 ectodomain을 포함합니다. 단일 막관통 서열을 통해 세포질 도메인과 연결되어 있으며, 신경계 발달(신경세포 이동 및 분화)에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
이 유전자 돌연변이는 CRASH(뇌량 저형성, 지적장애, 실어증, 강직성 하반신마비, 수두증)로 알려진 X-연관 신경학적 증후군을 유발합니다. 뉴런 특이적 엑손의 대체 스플라이싱은 기능적으로 중요한 것으로 추정됩니다.
