Target Information
This gene encodes a bitter taste receptor belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily, specifically expressed by taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia. Each intronless receptor gene encodes a 7-transmembrane receptor protein functioning as a bitter taste receptor.
The TAS2R5 gene is clustered with three other candidate taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and is linked to loci influencing bitter perception. It may play a role in sensing the chemical composition of gastrointestinal content and mediates signaling via alpha gustducin, PLC-beta-2 activation, and TRPM5 gating. Expressed in gustducin-positive taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelium.
