Target Information
This gene encodes a member of the candidate taste receptor family, belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily. It is expressed specifically in taste receptor cells of the tongue and palate epithelia.
The gene is intronless and encodes a 7-transmembrane receptor protein functioning as a bitter taste receptor. It is clustered with three other candidate taste receptor genes on chromosome 7 and is genetically linked to loci influencing bitter perception.
TAS2R4 acts as a gustducin-coupled receptor for denatonium and N(6)-propyl-2-thiouracil, implicated in bitter compound perception in the oral cavity and gastrointestinal tract. It signals through PLCB2 and TRPM5 and is expressed exclusively in gustducin-positive taste receptor cells.
