The Drosophila atonal gene encodes a protein with basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) domains essential for nervous system development. Mammalian atonal homolog 1 (MATH-1), also known as Atoh1, Ath1, or HATH-1, is a 351 amino acid transcription factor structurally homologous to the Drosophila atonal protein.
In mice, MATH-1 expression begins around embryonic day 9.5, initially localizing to cranial ganglions and the dorsal central nervous system. Expression becomes restricted to the cerebellar external granular layer by day 18 and is undetectable in adults. MATH-1 is suggested to regulate differentiation of neural subsets via E box-dependent transcription activation.
