Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS7 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein, analogous to a prokaryotic protein that organizes the 3′ domain of 16S rRNA near the P- and A-sites. Pseudogenes corresponding to MRPS7 are found on chromosomes 8p and 12p.
