Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a key role in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a protein-to-rRNA ratio of approximately 75%, opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The MRPS18C gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S18P family, one of three human mitochondrial S18 proteins that share sequence similarity with bacterial S18 proteins. Pseudogenes related to this gene are found on chromosomes 8p, 12p, 15q, and 22q.
