Cystatin C는 type 2 cystatin superfamily에 속하는 강력한 cysteine proteinase 억제제입니다. 내인성(lysosomal cathepsins) 및 병원성 단백질분해효소를 억제하며, 13 kDa의 분비 단백질로 생체액에서 높은 농도로 존재합니다. 모든 인간 핵세포에서 발현되는 것으로 알려져 있으며, 심혈관 질환(죽상동맥경화증, 아밀로이드 혈관병증, 심근경색 등)에서 변화가 보고되었습니다. 낮은 분자량 특성으로 인해 신부전의 바이오마커로도 활용됩니다.
