Target Information
The TGFBI gene encodes an RGD-containing protein that binds to type I, II, and IV collagens. The RGD motif is common in extracellular matrix proteins and mediates cell adhesion by serving as a ligand recognition sequence for integrins.
This protein plays a role in cell-collagen interactions and may contribute to endochondral bone formation in cartilage. It is induced by transforming growth factor-beta and inhibits cell adhesion.
Mutations in this gene are associated with multiple forms of corneal dystrophy.
