Target Information
Hormone induced following exercise or cold exposure that promotes energy expenditure. Induced either in skeletal muscle after exercise or in adipose tissue following cold exposure and is present in the circulation. Stimulates energy expenditure associated with browning of white fat depots and improves glucose tolerance. Acts indirectly by stimulating immune cell subtypes to activate prothermogenic actions in adipose tissue. Promotes IL4 expression and alternative activation of macrophages, supporting thermogenic and anti-inflammatory responses. Plays a role in metabolic adaptations to cold temperatures.
