Target Information
ASCL1 (also known as ASH1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor required for early development of the nervous system. It is expressed in fetal brain and is essential for the development and survival of subsets of autonomic neurons.
ASCL1 interacts with MEF-2A to regulate expression of genes critical for neuronal circuit formation in the central nervous system.
High ASCL1 expression in neuroendocrine tumors, such as medullary thyroid cancer and small cell lung cancer, makes it a useful marker for identifying cancers with neuroendocrine features.
The ASCL1 gene maps to human chromosome 12 and contains a trinucleotide repeat region, making it a candidate for inherited disease studies.
