Target Information

Alpha-2-adrenergic receptors belong to the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily and include three subtypes: alpha2A, alpha2B, and alpha2C. These receptors regulate neurotransmitter release from sympathetic nerves and adrenergic neurons in the central nervous system.
Studies in mice indicate that both alpha2A and alpha2C subtypes are required for normal presynaptic control of transmitter release. The alpha2A subtype inhibits release at high stimulation frequencies, while alpha2C modulates neurotransmission at lower activity levels.
This gene encodes the alpha2C subtype, which contains no introns in either its coding or untranslated regions.
