Background
This gene encodes a major cytoplasmic protein that is the only known constituent common to submembranous plaques of both desmosomes and intermediate junctions. It forms distinct complexes with cadherins and desmosomal cadherins and belongs to the catenin family containing armadillo repeats. Mutations in this gene are associated with Naxos disease. Alternative splicing occurs, though not all transcripts have been fully characterized. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
