Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the BCL-2 family, known to regulate programmed cell death. BAD positively regulates apoptosis by forming heterodimers with BCL-xL and BCL-2, reversing their death repressor activity. Its proapoptotic activity is controlled by phosphorylation, involving kinases such as AKT and MAP kinase, and phosphatase calcineurin. Alternative splicing produces two transcript variants encoding the same isoform.
