Target Information

ATP5A1 encodes a subunit of mitochondrial ATP synthase, which catalyzes ATP synthesis using the proton gradient across the inner membrane during oxidative phosphorylation.
ATP synthase consists of two linked multi-subunit complexes:

  • F1 complex: soluble catalytic core (subunits α, β, γ, δ, ε) with stoichiometry 3α, 3β, and one each of the others
  • Fo complex: membrane-spanning proton channel (subunits a, b, c)

This gene encodes the α subunit of the catalytic core.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 9, 2, and 16.
