Target Information

Microtubules are intracellular dynamic polymers composed of conserved alpha/beta-tubulin heterodimers and microtubule-associated proteins (MAPs). They exhibit intrinsic polarity with dynamic plus ends and less dynamic minus ends, essential for processes such as mitosis, meiosis, cell shape maintenance, and intracellular transport. Microtubules also enable cell movement via flagella and cilia. In mammalian cells, minus ends are anchored in microtubule organizing centers (MTOCs). GTP is crucial for tubulin dimer association and microtubule formation. Microtubule polymerization is reversible, and dynamic instability describes alternating growth and shortening at minus ends. Alpha-tubulin (~50 kDa) exists as soluble dimers or polymerized microtubules, encoded by multiple tubulin genes forming distinct classes (six in humans).
