The enzyme catalyzes the synthesis of GGPP from farnesyl diphosphate and isopentenyl diphosphate.
GGPP is essential for C20-prenylation of proteins and regulation of a nuclear hormone receptor.
Alternate transcriptional splice variants encoding different isoforms have been characterized.
